Nanostructures and Bio-inspired Computer Engineering

Nanoelectronics is the development of electronic devices with dimensions between one and ten nanometers. If Moore’s law continues to hold, it could be possible to construct Avogadro Computer, i.e. an architecture that efficiently employs 10 elements to perform computation, sometimes about 2020 [3]. Shorter-time prediction says that chips will contain 10 transistors and will operate at 10-15 GHz in 2012 [1]. It is not clear how, but two major groups of problems will have to be solved: (1) How to build Avogadro Computer physically, and (2) how to manage such an amount of resources effectively. While the first group covers technological problems like scaling limits, power management, reliability limits etc., the second group of problems (which are relevant for this paper) deals with computational architectures for nanocomputing. We are interested in nanocomputers because they should provide higher degree of parallelism than current computer technologies are able; massive parallelism is a good way to handle computational bottleneck. The second key feature is that a lot of resources, which can be utilized to implement adaptive and fault-tolerant devices, will be available.
